He lived a comfortable life in the Santa Clara Valley with his owner, Judge Miller. One day, Manuel, the Judge's gardener's assistant, stole Buck and sold him in order to pay a gambling debt. Buck was then carried to the \"man in the red sweater\" to beat to be tame. Then Buck was shipped to Alaska and sold to a pair of French Canadians named François and Perrault (for $300). They train him as a sled dog, and he quickly learnt how to survive the cold winter nights and the pack society by observing his teammates. He and the vicious(邪恶的), quarrelsome(好争吵的,好争论的) lead dog, Spitz, developed a rivalry. Buck eventually bested Spitz in a major fight, and after Spitz was defeated, the other dogs closed in, killing him. Buck then became the leader of the team. Then, Buck is sold to a trio(三人一组), Hal, Charles, and a woman named Mercedes, looking to make a fortune. However, they knew nothing about sledding or surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. They struggled to control the sled and ignored warnings not to travel during the spring melt. They first overfed the dogs, then when their food supply started running out, they did not feed them at all. As they journeyed on, they ran into John Thornton, an experienced outdoorsman who noticed that all of the sled dogs were in terrible shape from the ill treatment of their handlers. Thornton warned the trio against crossing the river, but they refused to listen and ordered Buck to move on. Exhausted, starving, and sensing the danger ahead, Buck refused and continued to lie unmoving in the snow. After Buck was beaten by Hal, Thornton recognized him as a remarkable dog and was disgusted by the driver's treatment of him. Thornton cut Buck free from his traces and told the trio he's keeping him, much to Hal's displeasure. After some argument, the trio left and tried to cross the river, but as Thornton warned, the ice gave way and the three fell into the river along with the neglected dogs and sled.
As Thornton nursed Buck back to health, Buck came to love him and grew devoted to him. Buck saved Thornton when the man fell into a river. Thornton then took him on trips to pan for gold. During one such trip, a man made a wager(赌博) with Thornton over Buck's strength and devotion. Buck won the bet by breaking a half-ton sled out of the frozen ground, then pulling it 100 yards by himself, winning over a thousand dollars in gold dust. Thornton and his friends returned to their camp and continued their search for gold, while Buck began exploring the wilderness around them and began socializing with a wolf from a local pack. One night, he returned from a short hunt to find his beloved master and the others in the camp have been killed by a group of Yeehat Indians. Buck eventually killed the Indians to avenge Thornton. After realizing his old life is a thing of the past, Buck followed the wolf into the forest and answered the call of the wild. Every year Buck came to mourn for Thornton at the place where he died.
. As I read the book, I find out that Buck can be very loyal and trustworthy to his master, if his master is loyal to him. When Buck’s last owner dead, he howled. He is sentimental, and loyal.
Buck’s love is another way of savagery. So I want to say that life is inconsistent while world is complex, but the complex world is just brought up by the easiest ways of the nature. The savagery makes world full of life, while push the world into the hell. This is the true life, colorful and endless. In some ways, I find that Buck can be satanic(邪恶的). To become the lead dog of the sled team, he would fight to the bloody death of the lead dog. However, it also reflected that he was endeavoring to the environment quickly and successfully. When Buck’s friend Curly was killed by the hungry huskies, which shocked Buck very much, he became to know that “no fair
way, once down, it means the end of you”. So Buck not only worked hard, but also strengthened himself secretly. As the time’s going on, Buck and Spitz finally had the fight, the fight for the power and Buck wan.
